Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat What about old ceramic tile?

The in-laws are replacing their ceramic tile & I was looking at a pile of it thinking it would be good cover for FH minnows, fry etc. Would this be OK to use in a new pond? Also what about using old pieces of carpet, maybe rolled up or with a hole in the center then slid over some vertical standing PVC pipe to create some cover? Just trying to brainstorm a little while I'm looking around at some of the in-laws "trash".

PJohn...following a major bathroom renovation, that's where all the old tile along with broken pieces of the new went. Hadda toss it in when wife wasn't around...if I get caught placing anymore "structure" you guys may not hear from me again...

I guess I'm not the only one who gets that spousal reaction to pond-related matters of extreme importance.

...OK, now I get it. This would explain the practice of pushing old cars, washing machines, refrigerators, and TV's over the edge of a ravine behind back-woods houses. All this time I presumed it to be poor eco-practice by "Deliverance" types when it simply is preparation of structure for a future pond.

I guess tile is OK then. What about carpet (see original post for details)? I don't know if it would be harmful to the fish or not. If I put in talapia they might wear themselves out chewing on it. :p

Not sure what good carpet would do...but I'd guess no harm, either...but even I wouldn't try to slide that one by the pond "owner" (wife)...

My thought on the carpet was to cut it in 4 ft. squares & run section of pvc through it to give the same affect as this mushroom hat configuration.
