I've been looking at wood duck houses on the internet. Would it be a good idea to have one on the pond. I was thinking to mount a post in the shallow end of my pond and secure the house on the post. Anyone have any experience with wood duck houses on or even beside your ponds? Any input appreciated.

Yeah, put 'em on the pond. The lil' ducklings spend a while being fed by Mom then do a near suicidal jump out of the nest. The nest needs to be above either soft leaves or water.

Wood ducks are OK around a pond. They don't usually congregate in big flocks, and shouldn't hurt a thing. You probably won't see much of them.

Build a tried-and true box design that is varmint proof, and the ducklings can climb out of when it's time.

Since ducklings are yummy treats for bass, I think it would be best to place the boxes over land.

Do you have wood ducks in the area already? We normally kick up one or two groups of them in the creek along our property line. In the evening we can watch group after group fly over as the follow the creek. Some days we've seen dozens of these small flocks of 2-5 birds.

A week or so ago, my wife and I went down to our pond just before dark and saw around 30 wood ducks in the water. There were more flying overhead. We'd watch a pair land and join the group and there'd be a few flying off at the same time. It was non stop action!!! Some were even running around on my dam.

We've never seen anything like it before or since.

Eddie

It's not how many ideas you have, but how many you make happen.
