When do CC spawn? I was fishing my pond this weekend and caught a female, I think, with a skined spot on the head, between the eyes, close to the mouth. I have read here that they bite each other during the spawn, are they spawning now? I thought they did that in the spring.

Any way I let her go and caught 2 big (8-10lbs) males, and one around 5lbs. Good eatin'. ;\)

From SRAC Publication No. 180, Channel Catfish Life History and Biology : Spawning temps from 75 deg F to 85 deg F (preferred 80 deg F), time period from late February to August depending on location.

I think it's too late for her to have just spawned, but not too late for spawning injuries to remain. Perhaps someone will have a good idea on how long typical CC skin abrasions take to heal.

There are some pics and discussion of CC spawning abrasions/bites in Catfish biting catfish.

Ok does any one know..do females always have eggs? even if they are not in the spawn? We caught 2 small female CC last nite and they both had undeveloped eggs.

new water - these eggs could be unlaid eggs destined for reabsorption.
