I have had places in Rhinelander, Adams, and also owned "grass lake" near Crandon currently trying to get a pond fishable in the Adams area...seems there are no fish now but apparently had fish at one time or another. That dark water might be stain from the pine trees and to a certain extent it helps keep algae down.
Just bought a aerator from keystone the 1/4 HP model and needed almost 250 feet of line but it really is boiling the water. Like you I cant get up to our spot very often but manage about once a month for a couple of days. Our goals are similiar but I am going to go with perch and bass maybe a few BG. My pond only 7-8 foot deep so intend to have a small energy type aerator for an open area in the cold winters

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR POND? OURS IS ONLY 7-8 FT ALSO . DO YOU HAVE TROUBLE KEEPONG FISH OVER THE WINTER OR DOES YOUR AIRATOR BRAKING THE ICE DO THE TRICK? I TRIED FISHING IN IT WITH A POLE BUT DIDN'T EVEN GET A NIBBLE. OURS HAS BEEN CLEANED UP FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS NOW.

have only had it about 9 months so you are ahead of me. The only fish I have seen in this pond are very small minnow like types and I have no idea what they are. Have tried a worm and bobber and nothing not even a nibble...The prior owner was using it as a bird pond as he hunted. He apparently stocked it 20 years ago but the years have depleted the fish. I just got the aerator so winter will also be a challange. My plan is to just aerate for about a year then stock fatheads in the fall and perch, bass BG the following spring.
Both of us have the same problem being away from the pond 90% of the time. We live in the Chicago Suburbs.

ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO I PUT A SUMP PUMP IN THE WATER AND RAN IT ABOUT 2 HOURS EVERDAY IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON TO BREAK A HOLE IN THE ICE. THE ONLY FISH I SEEN THE NEXT YEAR WERE LITTLE MINNOWS AND SMALL BULLHEAD. WHICH I DIDN'T PUT IN . I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY CAME FROM.
THIS TIME I PUT IN A SMALL AIR PUMP TO . IT WASN'T ENOUGH TO BREAK A HOLE IN THE ICE SO I ENDED UP RUNNING THE SMALL AIR PUMP FOR 7 HOURS DURING THE DAY AND RAN THE SUMP PUMP FOR 2 HOURS ADAY . I THOUGHT THAT IT MUST HAVE HELPED BECAUSE WE SEEN HUNDREDS OF 2-3 INCH FISH IN THIS SPRING IN APRIL BUT WE WENT UP THE END OF MAY AND WE DIDN'T SEE ANY SMAL FISH. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY ARE GONE OR MAYBE THEY ARE AT THE BOTTOM. ITS HARD TO TELL NOT BEING THERE THAT MUCH.
MY POINT IS THAT MY UNCLE HAS THE SAME AIR PUMP I HAVE AND HE ONLY HAD TO RUN THE AIR PUMP OVER WINTER AND HE HAD ABOUT A 4 FT HOLE THROUGH THE ICE. HIS POND IS ABOUT 14-16FT DEEP MY IS ONLY ABOUT 7-8FT SO YOU MIGHT NEED A BIG PUMP OR RUN A SUMP PUMP LIKE I DID SINCE YOUR POND IS 7-8FT DEEP ALSO. LET ME KNOW HOW IT WORKS OUT FOR YOU THIS WINTER.

Since there are very few, if any, fish in the pond i might not bother aerating over the winter. If I do will get a small linear and put a diffuser in at 3 foot depth just to keep a hole open. The linear's seem inexpensive to run and are reliable.
My electric is about 150' from the pond so thats another concern.
Had wanted to deepen the pond but my budget, about $3,000, won't allow both the deepening and the aeration. So far have spent about $500 on the aerator.
I envy these guys that live nearby their ponds.
