Hello my name is salt and I am a pond-a-holic. That said and truly understood I have a confession to make, but first some back ground. Recently the stocking truck came to our local farm store. I had ordered a few fish and was the first in line when this Good old boy from Arkansas (truck driver) must have had me pegged! He looked at me long and hard, spit a stream of Levi Garret that would have made a cormorant blush and asked me WHATS DAbiggest bull frog you ever seen? He smiled reached into a tank and pulled out the biggest @@$$^^&&** FROG I had ever seen! Now I have gigged many a frog, and I spent a lot of time last spring catching them alive with my teenagers but this MONSTER of a frog would not fit in the bottom of a 5 gal bucket! He knew he had me, smiled and asked me how many Giant tap poles did I want? I bought 50! I was so very happy and excited about the chance to raise a giant frog in my pond that the dam blue herons couldnt eat. Well I took my 4inch long tadpoles and fish home and put them in the pond. Well even with all the cover in my pond the bass promptly ate my damm tap poles! I was crushed!
Ok fast forward 7 days later! Through a friend of a friend I was turned onto a place to get CHEAP pond plants. It was a farm that once raised many kinds of plants for ponds that had gone out of business. Well I got directions to the place and found it with out problem but no body was at home! I called my friend and he told me to look in the tanks and green houses and take what I wanted and leave a note as I could pay later. Many of the tanks were in bad shape but a few had beautiful pond lilies of different colors. I removed 4 containers of plants wrote my name and phone number down on a slip of paper and left it in a box by the door. As I was heading back to the truck I spotted a row of tanks that I hadnt looked into yet. One tank was covered in slime and was full of some sickly looking gold fish about 4 inches long. The next tank had about 6inches of water covered in black slime and there in the center of the tank under the hot blazing sun sat THAT GIANT BULL FROG that had been on the fish truck! I knew it was him as he winked at me! I couldnt believe it was him! I picked it up and just marveled at his sheer bulk and could only imagine his baritone voice! I spent some time with the mega frog and even feed him some worms I found under a tarp and a few bugs! I hesitantly placed him back in the hot nasty tank and headed for the truck. Then I did something I still cant believe! I stole the dam frog! I took bubba the mega frog home and I felt like a kid whom just robbed a candy store! He hit the water with a splash and sang like a bird for me that night!
The next day I had to go back to work. My job takes me away for weeks at a time. I have called the owners of the farm several times and have only been able to speak to an answering machine. I want to pay for my plants and own up to the frog theft ,but can not bring myself to confess to a machine! Only a pond would make an honest man steal a frog! I just couldnt stand it! My wife says at night it sounds like a bass drum down at the pond! Now I have to figure out how to come clean without sounding like a nut case but I had to have that dam frog!

Great Story, Salt!
James, I think it is Laughing Out Loud.

I guess I saw it more of an act of kindness and sacrifice. A froggy rescue. Your selflessness is admirable.

How 'bout: "Jeremiah was a bullfrog ... he was a good friend of mine... I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him drink his wine". Everybody in harmony now!!!

That's a great story. I think it would be cool if we could archive stories like this in a common thread for publication in the magazine. It would make for a great humor article.

Ya know Andy ... you might just wanna KISS that big ole boofrog. I heard tell that sometimes they turn into a drop dead gorgeous blonde maiden with a slight proclivity towards nymphomania. Course that was over 60 years ago I heard that and I can't remeber who told me. Or why. Or for that matter, what I'd do about it if I found one. *Deep Sigh*

I spoke with my wonderful little wife this evening and asked about bubba the mega frog. She said he eats pellets when she feeds the fish. Maybe that is how he got so big! But at any rate she reminded me that when our middle son was 13 and shop lifted at the local Roses store after I made him go back and admit what he did, I then had him wear a sign in front of the store for an hour stating HE was a shop lifter! Now what kind of S.O.B does that!?? hahahah She has promised me not to tell my son who is now 18!

Come on now saltwater. I see this as purely a rescue mission. Without your diligent intervention the frog would surely be a extra inch of scum in that hot nasty tank. The SPCF would have been involved and fined the rightful owner to the bottom of his pocketbook. I think the SPCF owes you a metal and the owner owes you a steak dinner. You just keep up the good work that mother nature put you here to accomplish. The care, feeding and safe keeping of all thing aquatic! If there is no SPCF we could quickly create one with me as a charter member. :p

OK, I was'nt gonna say nothin, but PFFs comment bout "the care, feedin and safe keepin of all things aquatic" bout made me croak. Then Snadbox chimes in with "an act of kindness and sacrifice". Paaaleeeze, take off yer tinfoil hats, and get a clue. Ol cowboy is sharpinin his gig as I type. As ta the monster frog on the truck that would'nt fit in a bucket. Whack off his legs and fry em. Then place the torso on one of them 4 wheeled carts, with a sign that states Luuutennit Dan savin fer a pair of titainiems. Put him in front of a resturant servin frog legs, and he'll be more wealthy than Kermit. Bob-O

Oh man the shirt picture made me spit coffee all over my screen!
You know our ponds have changed a lot about the way I look at things. The ponds were built for 1 reason! The shallow pond was to be a flood and shoot waterfowl impound to hunt over, and for late season returning fowl to have a stop over so they could eat some high protein food for the trip north. The deep pond was the water supply for the impound. As the ponds perked life into our land I found my feelings about things changing. The deer, ducks GEESE, song birds, frogs and turtles just popped up like flowers. Well I added fish to the pond and watched it changed as the ecosystem came on line. Then what we wanted most happenedwaterfowllots and lots of waterfowl! I waited until we had a lot and then started hunting them and hunt them we did. After the last shoot which was a blood bath the fowl stayed away by and large for two months. Man I really missed my ducks and geese pitching into our ponds. Now I have nesting boxes and goose floats, I will not fish for my bass as they have become pets, and I am stealing frogs! I find myself gravitating to my ponds several times a day when I am on shore and do strange things like plant pond lilies, and bog plants, put up blue bird boxes WTF I was a stone cold KILLER!. I have made a vow to only shoot our impound a few times a year to control the resident geese and have made the property a bow hunting only zone. The shallow impound is turning into a grow out pond for frogs and BG, and I am considering building more ponds to grow fish! I am not sure whats happened to me but I love it! My hunting buddies think I have lost my mind and I have a goose/duck hunting paradise but it is now for the most part off-limits to hunting! In the future our land will be sold, and now any property has to have PONDS big happy ponds!

Altho I may disagree somewhat with the protected fish thing, your pond-world achievement is a goal that is shared by this nature-loving dreamer. I am proud to have the opportunity to post on your thread and willingly insist on wearing the tee-shirt in your stead at the scene of the crime.

Andy ... Do you use Photo Shop? You did an excellent job of removing your image from behind that lass and filling in the void. No not that void, I meant the space where your image used to be.

Cappy Im not sure what you meant as I am a bit slow! My wife is my best friend, fishing partner, hunting buddy, etc. I remember the first few post from you on the other forum and how amazed I was that your wife was your hunting partner and how much time you spent together. Now I understand and wish that everyone could be as lucky! The only thing for us as I can not get her to go offshore! She loves to fish ,is the most organized partner I have ever had, she is never late and is the first in the truck. But when it comes time to head to the blue water she bails out! She has become a pond-a holic as well as she takes care of the farm while I am at sea.

My wife is my best friend, fishing partner, hunting buddy, etc. Look at the pose of that gal in your picture (I had no idee that it was your wife). If she appeared as a result of your kissing a frog, and you were there with her somewhere ... I naturally assumed you must have been directly behind her and you used a photo editing software to remove yourself from the picture. Oh well ... I thought it was humorous when I first posted.
