Will rusty metal affect the water chemistry and fish? There is some old metal scaffeling that I want to put in the lake for cover.

Probably won't introduce any more iron into the water than if you put in a stripped down old car body. Both would have minimal impact in several to numerous millions of gallons of water. I would be more concerned about any lead based paint or the health affects of smoking cigarettes or second hand smoke.

I agree with Bill. Use the scaffolding. It will make great cover, and last a long time.
