Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Central Indiana ... Too hot for Yellow Perch?

I was wondering if yellow perch would be an option for a pond around central/slightly southern Indiana (just south of Indianapolis), or if temperatures get too high. I never see any perch in ponds around the area, just LMB and BG.

Lets call the hypothetical pond in question 3 acres with depths up to 15',and some sort of diffuser/aerator.

Also, if they would survive, would they spawn well and what considerations for spawning habitat should be made.

You wouldn't have any problems, in fact, with both males and females they may do too well and stunt on you as one female can produce several hundred thousand eggs. Kentucky does not allow their importation so that should tell you something.

I try to plant only female fish annually although a few males have apparently slipped through. However i have such a high density of bass the bass seem to keep the offspring in check.

Sounds wonderful I also find the idea of going "predator heavy" to keep them in check very attractive.

Oooh, I wonder if perch and crappie would kinda "cancel each other out" and keep both populations under control.... probably wishful thinking

BJ - There is a small pond near me stocked with perch, crappie and a few catfish. I fished it recently and caught 36 fish (18 perch & 18 crappie). Perch ranged in size from 6.75"-11.2" whereas crappie ranged in size from 6.0"-8.2"; one was 8.2" others were 6.0"-6.2". Crappie were too crowded and not getting enough to eat.
