Hello all. This is my first post after reading a lot and learning a little from all the forums on this site. I am a member of fishing club in central Alabama with an 80 acre lake and an average depth of about 9 feet. We have the problem of too much water. In the spring we probably could drain and refill the lake in about 1.5 to 2 weeks. Our dam includes a spillway, a low point gate (from the original millhouse used to grind stuff) at about 16 feet below full pool. We also have 8 emergency flood gates with a low point of about 4 feet. Our alkalinity is about 8ppm. Fishing tends to be so-so. A recent trip of about 3 hours yielded about 6 bass, a chain pickerel, and 8 bluegill. A survey several years ago suggested we lime the lake and trench or pipe off excessive incoming water. Now my idea is to run pipes starting from well up the feeder streams, along the bottom of the lake and then through one of the flood gates or out the bottom of the mill house gate. Everyone at the club seems to think I am crazy but they can�t tell me why this would not work. We could lime and fertilize below the intake of the pipe and have some home of retaining some bloom to help in the fish production. Any thoughts on this idea would be appreciated.

There is a back issue of Pond Boss that contains an article of a mill pond much like yours. It detailed their plan on improvements, I will try to find the issue. Bottom line, the water flow was the base of the problem they were trying to tackle.
