Hello, all. New poster, but I have been lurking and reading for the past several months to learn as much as possible.

Thought you might be interested in these pics of my recently completed pond... About 1 acre when full... Now all I need is rain.

From the access road, looking East.

From the middle of the dam, looking North.

I'm really thinking of a BG, HSB combination. I've got two little girls, and want to have a place where they can catch alot of fish... they don't have to be monsters.

George,

The pond is near Bryson, Tx, which is halfway between Jacksboro and Graham. (1.5 hours West / Northwest of DFW.

As far as fish selection, I like the HSB as a predator, and they should grow quickly. I would really love to have Crappie (grew up catching and eating them), but have decided against it, unless someone can recommend a hybrid strain that won't take over the pond.

I like you, wanted a fishable pond for kids and adults alike especially me after becoming disallusioned fishing for lure shy LMB.

BG&HSB are the answer especially in a new pond - you can avoid many of the costly mistakes myself and others have experienced.

Email me your personal email address and I will send you some BG and HSB pics that will really get your attention..... \:D

By the way, I am a strong proponent of stocking adult BG and large 1st year HSB stockers.
Todd Overton, of Overton Fisheries, is currently growing out 1st year stockers that he expects to be 8-10 inches in the near future.

Your daughters will be able to have instant gratification fishing as soon as you have water in your pond.

Im watching radar - heavy rain in Delta County hope to fill the acre pond that has been only half full for the past year and a half.
Main pond 3-4 ft low, so maybe will fill.

N.W. of the MetroMess doesnt look too good for this storm maybe later.
You are near the area of Dave Davidsons place Im sure he will chime in.

Good luck,

Hi Gary,

This are the first pictures I have seen of "House of Cards" pallet structures - nice concept.

That looks almost exactly like mine did prior to filling. I'm just South of Bowie. I like the shallower areas leading to deep water. I would recommend moving the pallets to a little bit shallower water. Wait, maybe I wouldn't do that. Rain is sometimes, or mostly, hard to come by in Northwest Texas. Those might not be that deep during the normal drought conditions.

I think I would add a couple to the shelf areas close to deep water.

How deep is it?

Are those brush piles I see at the inflow area?

The pond is 15 feet at its deepest point. The pallets that I put shallow should be about 3-5 feet below surface level if the pond is full. But, I agree with David on drought issues, that's why I scattered the structure to be at multiple depths. I figure with North Texas climate, the pond will fluctuate between .5 and 1 surface acre.

I really thought I would get some rain this weekend, but I guess it is not to be. I planted my deer food plots on Labor Day, and have not had a drop since then.

I think you've done a lot of nice structure work.

One thing I've always felt about putting structure in is that even when I've put in a good bit, I always feel like I could/should do more.

Some 20' x 30' brush piles would be great structure for bait fish. I would still think you'd be leaving enough open water that the HSB like.

Also, some rock piles and flats will also help keep down some weed growth. That's tough work to do from a boat, so now's the time.

I really thought 30 pallets would go farther than they did. I spent most of the day putting them in, and seeding with a rye/bermuda mix. At the end of the day... I realize that I need to get back out there next weekend and put more brush in.
