I have about a 50 acre watershed area that runs into my 1 acre fishing pond. This provides more than enough run off at the times we get rain here in south central Kansas, I was thinking about building a small pond above the one I have by excavating about a 1/4 pond in the run off area using a dam which I could flood in the fall to about 3 acres. The dam would have a straight flow through tube to allow draining back down to the 1/4 acre size after duck season. I figured I could plant sorgum or millet in the "to be flooded" area in the spring prior flooding in the fall. I hope I'm making sense with this post. the pond would be strictly to catch silt and water stock prior to fall...no fish, just waterfowl. Has anyone done anything like this or have any thoughts or suggestions about how to do this. I do have a track loader for the excavation and plenty of farm equipment for planting.

I believe I would stock some kind of fish to eat the mosquito larvae.

doug,
i have nevre done this, but I'm sure some folks here can help. Stay tunned.
I have a couple of questions;
1. Could you raise your existing pond or excavate the inflow area to make your current pond work?
2. Out of curosity - how deep would the flooded area need to be?

I have built a set-up much like that, except mine is only about 1/2 acre. I don't drain mine down, I just let the dry summer months do it for me. I'm not sure what kind of ducks you have coming thru Kansas, but mine are mostly puddle ducks. Puddle ducks prefer water shallow enough they can forage on the bottom with their butts out of water. 12-18" is optimal. If you plant wild rice, japanese millet,or smart weed you can sow in shallow water with no soil prep and will reseed itself for the following year.
