Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Crawfish digging

I'm having my leaking 1/2 acre pond lined with bentonite clay. We're having a bit of a drought here in Texas this year. The pond has now gone totally dry. I'm using this drought time to have the pond fixed. As the pond has gone dry over the last few weeks I've noticed crawfish holes around the water's edge. I'm about to spend a ton of money to have the pond lined with bentonite to stop the leaking. I'm worried about the crawfish digging holes in my expensive new lining. My questions are: 1. Since the pond is now dry are all the crawfish dead or just lurking below the surface and waiting to come back and dig holes in my new lining that I'm about to install? 2. If it is necessary to exterminate these critters and what is the best method? Once the pond is refilled I'm going to stock it with catfish. I'm sure once the catfish are stocked that they will keep the crawfish in check. Any suggestions? I'm investing a lot of money in the rebuilding and lining of my pond and don't want a bunch of holes in my bentonite lining. Thanks

If they are crawfish I doubt they are dead. Don't you layer of soil over the bentonite to keep it from forming cracks the next time you have a drought.
