I've dug some test holes and hit a coarse sandy layer at 10' deep. Can I get by with an 8' max depth, roughly 3/4 acre surface area in Gonzales Texas?

Previously, NRCS said 10' depth, but changed their tune and said better stick to 8' depth when we saw the test holes.

I'll be getting a good amount of runoff, placing the pond near a dry-creek which drains 1200 acres.

not sure about your part of the country but in louisiana 8'is plenty of water.if you find you need more water why not build a pond with a levee,you could then add as much height as you want to get the water depth you are looking for.

PJ, 8' ought to be plenty, assuming it rains. Maximum depth is just that. Maximum. A dry creek that drains 1200 acres says a lot about your rainfall patterns. However, I'd go for it. You can always pump from the creek after rains.

Not sure how much rainfall you have but we have ponds 20 miles west of Gainesville, Tx and we get around 33-35" annual rainfall. First year we bought it we had 10 foot ponds go dry. We have since dug them out and we will not build a pond less than 14 feet deep without putting a well on it. Looks like you have plenty of drainage but you may have a feast or famine situation if you don't have more rain than what we have.
