My recently constructed pond is in the process of filling with run-off water. The pond is currently at a capacity of 1/6th its total designed size. The pond is surrounded by new grass that is beginning to come up. All the grass seeds are native to the area. The pond is also surrounded by many trees! Thus, the nitrogen content in the water should be high eventually from the leaves.
I'm in an area that land owners, I believe, commonly ad lime to their ponds because of the acidic soil conditions. I'm going to do a test on the soil to be sure of what I need or don't need, but my question is this. If I end up adding lime, should I add it to the pond bottom where there is currently no water? Or, should I add the lime to the banks where it can drain in at a slower speed? The reason for the question is two fold. One, would adding lime for the maximum capacity be detrimental when it's not even close to being full. Second, would adding lime to the newly seeded area have an adverse affect on my new grass?

Jimmy,
I'll take a shot...
Answer, all the above. Add the lime on the bottom, in the water, and in the area that drains into the pond. It should not hurt your grass unless you put it all in one place on top of the grass. In fact, it should help your grass utilize nitrogen more effectively. You didn't mention if you had stocked fish yet, and at 1/6 full, I'm assuming you have not yet done that.

Meadowlark,
That's right, no stocking done as of yet. Just finishing up on the bass structure and waiting for rain.
Thanks for the info. I'm glad to know the lime won't harm the grass.
