Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Windmill well in the way

I have been thinking about enlarging my pond which is currently about 1 acre with an average depth of 5 feet. The problem is I have a well where I want to enlarge the pond. It has an old working windmill on it. I've used it in past summers to keep the water level up although it does not keep up with evaporation during the hottest months. I am in Kansas if that matters. [*] What kinds of problems does this create. I wouldn't mind digging a well elsewhere and moving the windmill.

Maybe have a well driller shut it down before you dig? Seems you could contaminate the aquifer with bacteria if you run the risk of pond water going straight down the shaft. Wouldn't hurt to ask a local well driller.

I think I would also want the well sealed off, if possible. The altruistic reason, as Cecil pointed out, is to avoid contaminating the aquifer. The selfish reason is to avoid having your pond water all sucked down into the aquifer when the aquifer level drops. You could have the potential for level fluctuations that some of those spring-fed ponds do, only more so.
