Recently a friend of mine was saying if he had a pond his insurance company would drop him. I was just wondering if anyone has had that kind of problem or had to get any additional insurance.

I just recently went through this with my insurance company and was "discounted" because I had several million gallon on tap for the fire dept if needed.Liability was the same with or without ponds. It probably varies by state and company. Some townships in Ohio also require fences around new pond construction.Ted

The nearest fire hydrant to my property is probably 1.5 miles away. After I built one of my ponds (about 125' from the house), I called my insurance company to see if I would be eligible for a discount. At that time they informed me a pond was treated like an inground pool and should be fenced!

My ponds are neither fenced nor did I get a discount.

Good Luck

Russ

I built a small 2 acre pond next to my rural home. I ask my ins agent if my rates would go up.

They said only if I built a structure on the pond like a dock.
