After seeing the post on pressure treated lumber i was wondering about telephone poles. i am getting ready to build a dock and i got a buddy that can get me some telephone poles for free. Does anybody know if they could hurt the fish?

I believe that most telephone poles have some type of petroleum based coating or additive.
For that, I would avoid using them.
But if you could get them without any coating, I don't think there'd be any problem.

Most telephone poles have creosote in them, toxic to humans. I don't know if it harms the fish or fishing environment, I would think there would be some effect, but I have seen several driven in ponds for docks.

Have you ever seen used telephone poles cut in sections and used for fence posts? They rot from the cut inward. You can stick your fingers between the growth rings. If you decide to use one, you need to treat the cut end with something.
