I have a 23 acre lake in West Central Alabama. In years past I have had lots of water turkeys. This past summer I put in a male and female pair of geese. A friend a a 33 acre lake about 2 miles down the road and he said he is covered up with the Cormorants. I have not observed a single bird this year. Could the geese be keeping the Cormorants away? Anybody have the same experience?

Wayne, in my 16 acre lake I have wild Canadian geese in Ontario, Canada. The cormorants come occassionally but not to any degree or numbers. I wonder the same question because there is an abundant amount of small fish to eat and no pressure to speak of. However, I don't see the geese chasing these eating machines around the surface water? There is a major problem with these birds in the Great Lakes basin but not at my tank yet.

Interesting, guys. Have not heard anything about this correlation. I'll check with some of my wildlife biologist friends and get their perspective.

Has the presence of geese helped deter herons?

I have not seen many herons since building the pond three years ago. The geese were added this summer by my daughter. I had no idea that they would do anything for the pond but swim around. They are somewhat protective of their territory. As a side note a snow goose showed up about a month ago and then a week later another. The domestic and snows hung out together but now the snows are gone but the domestic geese my daughter put in the lake are still there. I see comerants flying all over the other farm lakes (which are commercial catfish lakes) but so far I have not seen any on my bass/bream lake. Every other year I have had quite a few water turkeys enjoying the forage in my lake.

Guys-food for thought;
I grew up with a mating pair of mute swams (license required in Ontario)in my dad's 2 ac pond. When they are mating and have young nothing and I mean nothing is safe within the water area and they will try to drive everything away including us humans. They will show their aggression with their wings and will hit and bite if need be! Geese can't even share this water area.
