Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Did my neighbors have a fish kill? Heron attack!

It's been cold here but nothing really remarkable. Then I was driving by the neighbors' pond and saw something I'd never seen before: at least 20 herons (egrets? storks? IDK) all camped out in the shallow end shoulder to shoulder. I've rarely seen more than one or two together at a time and they usually seem to fight with each other.

Just though it was neat. Hope they don't fly up the road a ways and eat all my fish.

ETA: it's not obvious from the picture but it was mostly whites with at least 3 great blue herons. There were also a few ducks.

Blue Herons are fairly territorial if my understanding is correct.

I'm not sure if those more grey colored birds were actually GBH or not.

They look white, not GBH, to me.

Looks like Great White Egrets that are with a Little Blue Heron?? I'm near the Great Salt Plains refuge and we have them frequently here until they migrate South.

They sure look like they are staged for catching any fish that come near the edge of the pond.

The whites and the blue herons all seem to be about the same size, which is more or less regular adult size for a GBH. Hard to say for sure from a distance.

They're all still there a few days later. When I drove by this morning they were working over the far side of the pond. Lucky neighbors.
