Prior to this year, I haven't done much Fall fishing. I was excited to get after it this Fall, but wasn't able to get on the water as much as I would like in October, and I think I may have missed the Fall frenzy.

I know in year's past when I was younger, fishing was good right when the weather started to turn cooler. Down in South AL, we had a couple of days last week when the temps dipped down into the low 30's, even upper 20's.

Fished hard for 3 days once the temps started to warm up, but almost nothing. Late one afternoon, I caught 3 on a shallow jerkbait. Only 3 fish I caught in 3 days. There was a lot of activity on the banks from the little guys, but couldn't get hardly anything to even show interest anything I threw shallow.

Yesterday, I had plenty of time and decided to stay away from the bank and fish nothing but deep water. Just threw a worm, let it sink, bump it slow along the bottom and I caught 11.

Do you think it was that couple/few days where the temps got really winter-like and the bigger bass have migrated deeper until Spring? Or can I expect to still have some days where they are aggressive and shallow?

Would love to hear from folks who have Fall fished way more than me.

What is your water temp ? Has the thermocline inverted (oxygen at all depths)?

Find vertical structure to fish and the fish will be active at some depth on the structure.

Not sure on the water temp but will be easy enough to measure once I get back up there. Regarding the thermocline, would that be gauged by just measuring the water temps both shallow and deep?

Thanks, ewest.

Yes, take temp measurements from surface to bottom about every foot.

Took some temp readings yesterday. Not exactly every foot, but several readings between 1 foot and the bottom (about 12 ft). temps ranged from 64 at the first foot down to right at 60 at the bottom. So pretty uniform.
