I stocked 25 4" channel cat fingerlings in my pond (only 1/4 acre since it's been low) back in May of last year.

This past weekend I bought a bag of fish food from Tractor Supply and thought I'd toss some in and see what happened.

Well, it didn't take long for the fish to come. About 15 small perch came first (I had stocked 25 or so back in may), then here came the catfish...about 8 of them anyway. I was blown away by how much they had grown. They were 12" or so.

Then I noticed some other small (what looked to be) 4-6" catfish as I walked around the pond. Could they have already reproduced that quickly?

I'm thinking I'll keep feeding now, but I only get out to the ranch every weekend, so I assume feeding once a week is okay? (I thought about getting a Moultrie feeder.)

This time of year, they probably won’t eat much but I like to try when the water is kinda warm.

What kind of structure do you have in your pond?

My Channel Cats are reproducing in my pond probably because I dumped several dump truck loads of pipe chunks into the pond in various places, i put it in there for structure and cover purposes but obviously some have landed probably with mud in one end that is giving them nesting cavities.

In your case Im not sure that they would have spawned at that young age, especially if the young are already up to 6", some of the educated guys may chime in and give a theory on that.

What I would guess they may be mud cats that have found their way into your pond, other than that, the difference in growth rates of the fish I stocked in my pond really surprised me. some of the same CC that I stocked, some seemed to grow literally twice as fast as others.

Yeah, water is still pretty cold here.

Not much other than some downed branches. I'm in the process of expanding the pond and will certainly be adding additional structure when I deepen the other half.

I'm pretty sure there's no fish in there that I didn't add or didn't know about. In fact, the pond dried up last year during our drought, yet somehow a couple of bass and bluegill survived in about a hot tub amount of water. When the pond filled back to the halfway point is when I added the fish.

Channel cats usually have to be pretty large to start spawning, so I doubt your fingerlings could have even had a late spawn last fall.

One option is that the small cats are actually from your stocking of fingerlings. When fish are introduced to a new environment, some percentage may actually fail to "thrive". It may be that your small fingerlings are surviving, but are not effectively feeding to put on weight.

Another option is that they are just the males from your fingerling stocking. Male CC are typically smaller than females. Your 4" fingerlings might have included 5" females and 3" males. The males may still be a little small, but hopefully will start putting on weight this spring!

Finally, you may actually have some bullheads in your pond. Is it a new-built pond with no connection to creeks or other ponds? If there are connections, then you could have bullheads from those sources, or there is even a slight chance that your fish supplier had a few bullheads in your order. (I doubt that latter theory, most suppliers do a great job raising their channel cats.)

I see "little catfish" in our creek every spring. I have both channel cats and yellow bullheads. They are very easy to distinguish when you can observe them swimming from a side viewing angle. The CC have a very deep "V" in their tail, even when they are small. Yellow bullheads have a perfectly rounded tail. However, you could have black or brown bullheads - they have a very slight notch in their tail, but certainly much less than a CC.

Hope that helps a little. Glad to hear that a large number of your CC fingerlings are growing rapidly. They are an amazing fish in small ponds, with an impressive growth rate - especially if you give them supplemental feed! Have fun catching them in 2026!

Pond water turning brown after rain is often due to runoff carrying organic matter, clay, or tannins from surrounding vegetation. Adding gypsum or alum can help clear the water by binding particles.
