How thick does the clay need to be layered over an area of poor soil in the lake bottom? Most of my area is good clay but I want to be sure I put enough clay over suspected sand stone type area to prevent leak. I considered going down an extra 2 feet and putting 2 feet clay in it's place but is this overkill?

IMO no. Maybe you'd get by with 1 foot, but all the experienced leaky pond fixers (and avoiders) seem to prefer 2 feet.
