I know there must be a million variables, but I’m asking anyway. Do SMB spawn later in the spring than YP, GSH, RES and HBG?
The reason I’m asking is I’m at the pond and there are larger fish really on the move. Large wakes from aggressive moves. Just wondering if the SMB might be spawning, or just near the bank feeding on all the fry.
I know my SMB have had successful spawns because we’ve caught a fair number of second ge station fish. Not lots maybe 10. Still have just kept 5 of the original stickers from 2015.

SMB typically spawn in mid 50's to low 60's water, depending on a variety of conditions. I would assume YP would be earlier than that and think HBG would be later (normal BG would be), I don't know about the other 2 but would guess later for them also.

Thanks Gents. Nice day at the pond. I’m afraid my grandkids have been fishing it too hard. I believe there’s still a whole lot of fish in it, but too many have been caught too many times.
Getting more difficult to catch em.

Leave them fish, but take 'em out!! Return very few. Harvest is a basic part of pond management.

Ok, we kept 1 SMB (turned out to be female and full of eggs, crap). 2 YP both males, 4 RES of undetermined sex, and 6 HBG/RES crosses that were big enough to fillet.
I’ll continue to harvest fish.
We did catch 10-15 very small YP, not sure of age. Like 2 to 3”.

SMB are on the beds here. Haven't checked for LMB but I would think they are on the beds too.

Where the SMB are from may be important in terms of when they are nesting. Those I am familiar with do not get started until water temperatures get into upper 50's to middle 60's F. In ponds with lots of warm shallows that was already realized two weeks ago, although all nests made at that time in my ponds failed owing to cold snap the following week. Same ponds are going at it again now.

Stream stocks I watch usually are a couple weeks later and can be spawning well into June. Streams I watch are shaded by trees and more often charged with lots of springs along their length.

Does anyone know if the 2-3" YP that SetterGuy is catching could be the result of the egg strands he witnessed in the pond around the 3rd week of March? Could they be that big already in a month?

One month old YP even in the best conditions will be 1"-1.2". His 2"-3" YP are very likely male perch from last years hatch.

I've been seeing a few LMB on beds for over a week maybe even 2 weeks. At first I thought they was just feeding near the bank but after seeing them in the same spot and never leaving for this long I figure they're on beds. Most of them are deep enough that depending on how clear the water is, it is hard to see them, but one I can see real good and watch it chase off the BG that get to close.
