I've been searching for a high prrotein feed for HSB and just haven't had any luck finding a reliable source for Purina Aquamax.
I have found a product that really sounds like it fits my needs...made by Rangen here locally. It is 42% protein and comes in various sizes.
Anyone with experience with Rangen for HSB? Thanks.

I'll try to check into this a little, Meadowlark.
SRAC Publication No. 304 indicates that protein percentages around 41% are pretty good for SBH. My main consideration would be to find out from the manufacturer what the food production date was in order to be certain that you have not exceeded the shelf life. Protein degrades and fats go rancid after a time. That's a fact of life. The warmer the environment is where the feed is stored, the more quickly you will exceed shelf life. I think the general rule of thumb is three months. I'll bet Cecil knows a bunch about this subject.
I don't have any specific knowledge of this particular brand of feed. I'd like to know how this works out.

Bruce,
Its actually made at a plant here locally(Angleton) so it is relatively fresh. The major fish dealer who also has pay as you go fishing lakes (Lakes of Danbury) in this area is one of their their biggest customers.

Rangen is a well known feed company that produces feed for the aquaculture industry. I think you'll do fine with them. Why not contact them and fire away with questions? http://www.rangen.com/rangen006.htm You're really fortunate to have a feed manufacturer near by. I pay a fortune in shipping for specialty feed not available through Purina. Unfortunately Purina believes in one size fits all and I don't agree.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Mlark _ I agree with Cecil. Rangen feed is a quality aquaculture feed with a pretty good reputation in the industry. I would not hesitate using it for my fish and I am particular about my fish feed. Your HSB should do fine on the 42% feed. Let us know how they seem to like it.

I agree, it is good stuff. We've used it a lot. Shipping cost will eat you up if raising lots of fish, however.

Todd,
Its just down the road a ways from me here on the south side of Houston. I'm switching over to it exclusively now and will see how it does after a summer growing season.

Meadowlark, where do you live? I'm in Clear Lake; trying to raise a 20 yr. neglected pond in Miss. from the dead. Do you get the Rangen in Angleton, or an area feed store?

I get it in Angleton...call them at 979-849-6757. That is direct from the manufacturer. Should be fresh that way.

I've only been using it this growing season, and I'm seeing very positive results already. It's a great product, from all I can tell.

I used the Silver Cup product exclusively for four years with great results. The only problem was that the company would bill me with a little note stating "shipping absorbed" and the cost would end up being .77/pound for the product. That got a little pricey for me.

I paid 0.72/pound for the Zeigler 42% feed I use.It seems like a lot when compared to catfish feed but I like the results I've seen. I only do this as a hobby so cost of feed is secondary to my enjoyment, but a lot can be said about conversion rates of various feeds and the total cost involved.I'd agree with others that a local source for fresh feed is a plus. The price goes way up if you throw feed away because it's rancid or out of date.
