Not 100% sure if it a tadpole or toadpole...or what it is exactly. I've been told tadpole. I have a million of them!

Not a tadpole, those are the young stage of the American Toad. They are jet black, and grow from being specks to that size in a matter of 10-14 days. They then swim in big groups in the shallows just like your other picture. They seem immune from any predation. I have never seen birds or fish eat them. Then one day they start growing legs and in a few days they all are ready to crawl out of the water. Then you will see the edges of the pond crawling with tiny toads all scrambling to get back into the woods. Once on land they are easy targets for predators. But for the most part there are enough eggs laid every spring that they seem to maintain their numbers.

Have resisted up till now but the term tadpole includes the immature stage of toads as well as frogs.

I am glad to report that most of these "tadpoles" have graduated to tiny frogs with tails and vacated most of the shallows. In there place are now thousands of recent fathead minnow hatch! Cannot wait to stock predators in the fall and hoping for a crazy strong forage base.

Do fish eat tadpoles? All fish? We had millions of them a couple of weeks ago, now I can't find any! Fish will eat tadpoles, but they are not typically their first choice. I suspect that yours have turned to land. My pond was overly full of at least 4 types of tadpoles prior to stocking game fish. How that many tadpoles turned into frogs and I did not witness horrible amounts of hoppers in the yard, shop, and house...I have no idea. The amount of tadpoles showing up has drastically reduced since the introduction of fish into the pond, but I don't think it's necessarily from the fish eating the tadpoles, but more to do with the fish eating the frogs OR the frogs know the fish are their and choose to lay elsewhere.
