I'm posting this for a friend. He has a 2 year old self contained pond approx. 1 surface acre that is 3 feet deep in the shallow end falling 1 foot every 3 feet to a depth of 10 feet. His water is still murky and has never cleared completely. He has been told to add Alum but doesn't know how much to add without over doing it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance for any responses.

It should be fairly easy since you can figure out how much water is in there. Since it is one acre you just need to find the average depth. Then find out how many gallons are in an acre foot. Hope this helps. This website will show you how much to use. http://wildlife.tamu.edu/publications/taexponds/0905a.pdf

I read somwhere it was one tablespoon per thousand gallons. If you put too much it does not hurt anything as it does not change the p.h.
When I added too much it coagulated evertything on the surface, when you use the right amount it settles to the bottom. It was unnettable from the top, except when I added hay to the net to give it something to cling to. With the right amount you can stir the pond to have the settlements end up in the deeper middle.
Good luck!
