We have american pondweed starting to grow in our 1 acre pond. As of now it is only along the edges extending ten feet out into the water. At what point should I be considering thinning it back or attempting to get rid of it? And how does it affect the oxygen levels?
thanks cat

Depending on your water transparency it will PROBABLY not grow much deeper than 5-7 ft deep. But in clear water conditions (clarities to 5-8ft) the amer. pondweed could grow into 8-9ft of water. I like Amer. pondweed because it grows underwater in loose, vertical strand, open beds that fish can easily swim and move through. Am. Pond weed is a very beneficial pond plant for protecting small fish and for growing invertebrates that feed small and medium sized fish.

Thin it whenever it grows to amounts you find it a nuisance. A Y shaped weed cutter will do a lot toward clearing and thining large areas of the weed patches. Try not to eliminate it. The Y cutter (water weed cuter) has been discussed here in old posts, it is sold by Outdoor Enterprises Ltd and advertised in Pond Boss mag.
