After installing my aeration pump I have been waiting on the water temps to come up so I could spray the filamentous algae with copper sulfate (Cutrine plus). The pond had extensive shoreline coverage out to 6 feet and 1 very large mass about 30ft x 40ft in the shallow end. Well I mixed the spray and hit half the pond. 48 hours later all the sprayed area is clear(did it sink) and what is left floating is brown and grey looking. Things are VERY quite down at the pond. The fish are not eating the frogs aren�t croaking it is very still and I am worried! I have seen a few BG and a couple HBSB but noting is eating and activity is way down����..are they in shock? PS the pond is � AC and I used a half gallon of cutrine plus mixed in a 4 gallon backpack sprayer.

Did you follow the label instructions?

What was the product Copper Sulfate or Cutrine? They are different. CS in low alkalinity ponds can kill the fish as it stops their ability to uptake O2. Not the case with chelated copper products like Cutrine. It will kill your plankton bloom (food chain base) so be ready to deal with that if needed. Best of luck. I bet it is ok.

What do you do to get the plankton to bloom again?
I'm havinv all the same broblems but have not tried the cutrine yet. We had a freeze then hot then freeze again then plankton bloom then the FA started dieing in the deep parts not it stinks and has black muck. It's a new pond buil last fall and was very clear up until may?

U have the cutrine but have not used it yet. Worried about my freshly stock baby fish.

That's about the same application rate and method I use on my 1/2 acre pond. I have similar effects on the algae but my fish keep eating and I don't have aeration.

Hey Ryan,
I'm in southern Brown county and I'm suiffering badly from FA. When did you apply CP. Jones does not recommend the application of CP unless there is aeration?
Do you swin in the pond and do you have the black muck from the decomposing matter?

I have a new pond, 2 ac. and have a bad FA problem as well. I wanted to wait and see before I applied any chemicals but the water level keeps dropping due to lack of rain and the FA seems to be expanding.

Does FA oxygenate water like other plants and use up Oxygen when it is dying? I feel like I should do something other than try to rake it out ( futile effort).

With the water level dropping would this be a good, bad or indifferent time to use chemicals? What will happen to the pond if I just choose to ignore the FA into the future?

Ron, I don't have aeration but treated as soon as the water temps reached 60 degrees and then again last week. I treat half of the pond, wait 2 or three days then treat the other half. I have very little black muck in only a couple of areas. My pond was built late 2003. I swim in the pond often. I have a small dock with some sand around it to I don't have to walk in the mud. It seems as though you are having an awful lot FA and muck problems for your first season. What is in the watershed coming into the pond? Woods, crop fields, lawns? Maybe you can post a picture as we all seem to have different standards wrt a BIG FA problem.

Sorry for the delay. My problem was that I fertilized to grow grass after construction and have crop (pasture)fields near by. the pond is in a bowl.
The cutrine+ worked great. I only treated 1/3 of the pond and everything died, all the way down to the 10 foot mark. It was so bad that when I used SCUBA equipment to clean the pump intake strainer on the bottom of the pond, 10 to 11 feet, the FA was all over me, it was like swiming through fine cotton candy.
How did you put the sand in without the mud coming through or it washing to the bottom?
I'm in southern Brown County and the pond is now down 3 feet. Please forgive the spelling.
