We moved into a new house late last summer which included a beautiful pond complete with an island and a bridge over to it. We are slowly learning to the pond way of life. Pond is about half an acre but when you subtract the island land its 3/8 of an acre and 9.5 ft deep at its deepest.

Pond came with a surface aerator which we took out for the winter. It's installed on the front half of the island. From talking to neighbors and pictures left of the house over the years we know the pond gets major algae issues on the back side of the island.

We are looking into installing a windmill aerator and have two lines run off it into the back of the pond. Hoping this will help cut down our algae issues.

We are in ontario, canada. our pond froze over this winter, we've started cold water bacteria now that its opening up, hoping to get ahead of the algae. so far havent seen any floating fish so im hoping they are all ok smile What else do I need to know/do? Any issues I should know of with the windmill?

A windmill could be a nice addition, and functional. They're a little tedious to put together, but worth it. Moving the water helps minimize algae issues. Take a look at our Resource Guide for help. We vet all our advertisers and are confident in their products and services.

Wait until a windmill fails in late December and there is a foot of snow on the ground and you have to drop the tower to fix the problem........ I've got 2 Koenders that are on top of 20' tall towers that need work. One has a tip kit, the other does not. Next time you are up this way, stop by and I'll put you to work! wink grin

I prefer a grid based electric compressor, even if it is 1,000 feet away from the pond and you have to trench a line to the pond.
