New to forum, First time pond owner. Been hot and dry for awhile. after recent heavy rains, this has happened to my pond. How to do I go about getting this cleared out? Concerned about my fish, and will this harm them? all help/input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome! By the way this is a new pond been filled for roughly a year. don't know if that makes a difference or not.

It could be a Euglena bloom common in a relatively new pond. Capture some of it in a water bottle. Cap it for 1-2 hrs. Then take a wiff of the air in the bottle. If it smells moldy or vile it is a problem bluegreen algae. If it just smells like regular pond water or slightly fish then it is a green algae or Euglena bloom - no need to be concered. It will degrade as the water cools.

Well tested water as Mr.Cody recommended and smelled like fishy water. what a relief . Another question is would aeration prevent this in the future. Should I continue to feed once a day or stop until algae is cleared up? Thanks!

Aeration always helps the pond produce better water quality which at times includes some algae. You might want to cut back a little bit on the amount of feed you add each day until the surface green dissipates. Often the green film will appear in new ponds from fresh decomposition and leaching from the bottom soil that produces dissolved organics that often feeds the Euglena blooms. .

I was feeding two solo cups of Optimal fish food daily. One in morning, and evening. Since this I cut back to one solo cup a day (feeding in the evening). Is this ok, or should I cut to less food daily, or feed every other day?

Hi all, (mod's, please move this if it is misplaced).

I am by most accounts quite new to pond maintenance. I have a fairly small pond, about 25' x 20' x 6~8', which is seriously laden with thick, heavy FA. Is there anything specifically I can do to begin making a difference this time of year to reduce algae? From all the reading I have been doing, largely on this forum, but also of course many other sites as well, I intend to stock many [blue] tilapia next spring as soon as water temp allows.

In July I installed a single Matala 9" diffuser in the center, with a HK60-L air pump, weighted 5/8" line from pump to diffuser. This all powered by two 100w solar panels and mwands.com's very handy Suntaq unit. I mention this specifically because it is NOT a 24/7 system, nor does it run effectively on a very cloudy day.

Does this system benefit the pond much at all, given it's characteristic inconsistent operation (cloudy or dark = no or very minimal bubbles)?
