After 10 years without an aerator on my 9ac pond in
Chester, S.C.,I have had a major fish kill- lost 3000+/- threadfin,500+/- BG,100+/- LM, and 30+/-HS. (I was amazed at the amount of threadfin as I stocked only once 4 years ago.) After two days of thunder storms the pond turned over last night. I am still smelling the stink from removing the carnage! I am very motivated to aerate to prevent this type of crash.

Will surface aerator be better than diffuser aerator to prevent crash? I believe diffuser will improve overall water quantity but I have been advised that surface aerator is better for preventing turnover crashes. Should I install both surface and diffuser? Your advice will be appreciated.

Without seeing your pond, focus on mixing the deepest area.

The pond has 3ac of 3'-4' water 2ac of 4-6' water and 4ac of 6'-10' water and receives a good amount of wind as it has trees on only one side- small spring but most water is run off. The shallow water is on the south end and deeper water is on north end.

Would you install diffuser aerator in the deep water and surface aerator in shallow water? Or would you only aerate deeper water. Is there any reason to aerate the 3'water?
