5 acre pond. Bluegill, redear, copperenose channel cat stocked fall 2003. Northern and Florida bass stocked spring of 2004.
I have been fighting filamentous algae since my pond was filled. Finally got the algae under control and now here comes the grass. I've been searching pondboss and can't find anything similar to what I have. The grass is rooted but it does not grow above the surface. It looks like hair and is very thick in places. Makes for very difficult fishing.
I am from Mississippi and there is a publication from MSU, MSU Cares, on pond management. There is mention of hairgrass. Does anyone have any idea what I have? The only plant I found that looked similar to what I have is called Roadgrass ,Eleocharia Baldwinii.
Forgot to add that I have 30 Grass carp. NO way they can control this stuff. No digital camera so no pictures. Help would be appreciated.

Try using aqua shade. If you filter the incoming light it will retard the growth of vegetation to allow your grass carp to catch up.

I'll start treating my wife as good as my dog when she starts retrieving ducks.

I've never used Aquashade, but I do remember what our resident expert, Kelly Duffie, once said in response to a similar question on this forum and to be exact here is the direct quote...

"Are there fish in your pond? If so, you'd best be cautious about putting AQUASHADE in there at this stage. If your pond has a heavy phytoplankton population, AQUASHADE can crash it - along with your dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. AQUASHADE is best used as a preventative measure, rather than a curative tactic."

Doctor Duck :

Your Cooperative Extension agent can help you if you get a sample . He can ID the plant or can have Bill Maley in Jackson or Marty Brunson at MSU help. Also one of the Florida { DNR ,Fish and Wildlife or Extension service} has an on line plant ID info with pic. I think the MSU cares pond Mgt. book references the Florida site. If this does not work post here and I can provide more info. Good luck. ewest

Thanks fo the resonses. I think I'll shy away from the aquashade.
The grass I have is thick. Resembles hair sort of the same way Spanish Moss does. If I could find out what it is I could go from there. Probably do what Ewest said. Anyway, the fish love it but it really is hard to fish in.
