I haven't run this post past Mr. Lusk, or the other moderators/admins. But ...
Our site, along with many others, has been under attack for the past few weeks by unauthorized users.
We put a lot of effort into keeping ahead of these distrupters. Unfortunately, sometimes our protection efforts affect more than just the bad people.
We've got really good assistance. Nobody has a real good answer right now.
Contact the Pond Boss office or one of the moderators if you are having issues.
I do not want to publicize our contact info because of these issues. Go to the main home site or to the magazine for contact info.

We have been hit hard the past week to 10 days. I think it's averaged around 8-12 spammers per day that us moderators deleted posts and banned.
There is some discussion that an approval form might have to be filled out and looked at by a Moderator or an Administrator before the person can make their first post. A lot of other forums have gone that route, and it might be the way to go.
Typically somebody "in charge" is on the forum every 6-8 hours or less, so it wouldn't take a long time to be "approved". This would only be for new members.

What policies are in place now, regarding new members? Can someone just sign up and begin posting, or do they have to answer questions first, or be approved my a mod?
Couple years back I achieved my personal best regarding spammers, over at BBG. 31 in a single afternoon, but luckily none made it to the forum/board.

Right now they sign up, are supposed to answer questions although there are no protocols in place to require any special answer, and start posting.

RAH, that was my fault. I was experimenting with blocking large blocks of IP addresses that are known for spamming. Unfortunately you and another member were in those blocks. I need to get a life; doing stuff like that on Sunday afternoon........... Sorry!
