Caught this guy last weekend. Check out the size of the blue tab/spot (not sure of correct term) on the side of this fish, it is very large. Do they normally get this large? I have caught a lot of bluegill over the years and don't remember seeing one like this. The picture is not the best but the spot is about four times the size of his eye.

Breeding age male is my guess.

Did you release or cull?

Bill D, do you think pure gsf, or hbg? I can't tell from the pic, and have trouble with those any way😮

I am 99% sure he's one of the hybrid bluegill that I stocked a couple years ago. Their shouldn't be any gsf in my pond. I was just questioning the size of the blue spot/tab on the side of him.

What may be "normal" for one pond isn't quite "normal" for another......

Yep, it's a hyb. Do you supplemental feed?

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

And it is likely a male HBG since the "blue tap spot" is noticeably larger. Most male HBG are male if they are the 1st generation of HBG. .

Yes sprkplug, I do feed when the temps are warm enough. I don't have a feeder but hand feed once a day, my pond is only about 1/2 acre. Not going for trophy HBG, just general good fishing. The one in the pic is actually a little over 8", a little on the small side compared to the others I have been catching (9"-10" average). I had him laying across my leg trying to hold the tape measure, him, and my phone to take a pic. As soon as I took the pic, he flopped and I dropped the tape measure. It bounced once and went right down the hole...

Tape measures don't take well to water. This one I know from experience.
