Just curious if a Home Depot rental 5ish HP trash pump will spray Alum far enough to apply it? I should be able to reach most of my pond from shore/the pier. I was thinking if I get an adapter to go from it's connection to a hose that would work. Is that crazy?

It will work, but if there is an insurance policy for the pump I'd get it. Alum wears out pumps quickly.

TSK, RENTAL is the key in that post. If it is a short term rental and it gets back quickly it may work... Not sure about the next guy who rents it

TSK, a 6HP, 2" trash pump on sale at a Harbor Freight is only about $169. Get the 2 year "no questions asked" replacement warranty for another $20 and you may find lots more uses for the pump. They DO come in handy!

What part(s) wear out on the pumps? Is there a common failure area?

Sparky, the Impellor seal goes pretty fast...teflon, ceramic or lubricating metal. The volute also pits quickly and becomes brittle, form my experiences.
The alum is pretty acidic and fairly abrasive, then the caustic and highly abrasive nature of the Hydrated lime wear them quickly.
I'm sure the aluminum Volutes and Impeller becoming brittle could be due to using cheaper, impure metals and porosity for the castings, and the seals need very close clearance tolerances for a long useful life...things you won't be assured of in a "cheap" pump, but it all comes down to what each individual considers cost effective for themselves.

I ended up deciding that it wasn't going to be cost effective to try to rent (4 hours at $40, 1 day at $80). I figured there's no way I'd get it done in 4 hours and then you're close enough to a unit you own. That excludes the ethical factor of if you should or shouldn't beat on a rental.
I ended up getting a Champion unit with host kit for $240 plus a 4 year warrant. I wish I had known about the harbor freight cheapy but it's not a huge deal. I figured like you mention, I'll find lots of uses for it.
It did work out for the Alum application. Whether or not the alum application worked is another issue.
At the end I noticed that it took a long time to run that thing clean. I don't know if that's part of the problem with the things going bad or not.
