Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Raising Forage and Bait THREADFIN SHAD - HELP

Thinking of stocking some threadfin shad. I've found a supplier, but have to get them within the next day or so - My pond is near Paris Texas. I've read mortality occurs near 42 degrees for the threadfin. I know they exist in Texoma which is the same northerly location as my pond.

Does anyone know the suggested stocking rate - i have an existing pond with LMB and CNBG - 2 acres

Opinions on survivability over the winters?

I am in Harrison Co, so S E of u. I am adding 10,000 TFS asap to a 3.5 acre pond. This number came from my pond consultant. maybe you can adjust this number for your pond.

I think the water dynamics of an 88,000 acre lake and a 2 acre are going to significantly different. I wouldn't correlate the shad surviving in Lake Texoma with the shad being able to sure in your pond.

As far as winter survivability, someone else with better knowledge will have comment fully.

I am no expert, but have studied this a bit in preparation for my pond near Hallsville, TX. Apparently it is very important for shad winter survival to have deep water that is relatively stable in term of temperature. So a deep pond, say 25 to 30 feet near the dam, offers better chances of overwintering than a pond with maximum depth of 10 or 12 feet.

Why thread in over standard gizzard?? G shad I hear can do better in smaller places than t shad. I netted 5 g shad in western south dakota 2 weeks ago.

Heads-up for any/all Texas guys about new regulations regarding transporting thread-fin shad or ANY baitfish/minnows.
Following discovery of Zebra mussels in Lake Texoma, spreading to other lakes/streams on the Trinity wathader shed, stiff fines or even jail sentences may be imposed.

The only suppliers that are licenced to transport bait fish have to have proof they have been hatched and raised on private fish farm.
I only know of one fish farm that is raising their own shad - there may be others.

David, I was told back in the fall, that a law may be passed in Texas where shad may not be transported. I am positive my fish supplier will not break any laws. They are a well known fish supplier. Overtons will supply my Thread fin shad and we want them in before they spawn. You will have to contact them for pricing. Good luck on your plans

Unless the majority of the adult LMB in the pond are over 22" or so, I wouldn't stock Gizzard Shad. They can grow from egg to larger than most LMB can eat in less than one year. I don't know of any northern ponds or lakes that have LMB large enough to control the adult GS.

Thanks for the heads up on this! Guess I need to stock my baitfish soon, but first I need to build the pond and get some water in it!
