Pond Boss Forums AERATION Systems questions Big Air Compressor for areator

Has anyone ever used a regular type air compressor as an areator? I am talking about the kind that you would have in the garage (5hp) one that would run air tools and such. Would it just cost too much to run one for a 7-8hrs a nite? I want to buy an areator for my new pond, and I also would like to have an air compressor for the garage, I could run a 1" pvc pipe to the pond regulate it down and kill two birds with one stone. Would this work? My pond is 3/4acre average depth is 8-10 feet the deepest is 20-24ft. I was thinkig about two defusers since it is rectangle. Thanx in advance.

Someone bought that up maybe 6 months ago. IIRC, the problems include possible grease/oil in the aerator air and (more important) the fact that a shop/garage-type air compressor is set up to run a whole different kind of pressure/volume load than what is required for aeration. I believe it's the kind of thing that could ruin a good shop compressor quickly.

It could be done, but you will be rebuiding it very shortly. They are not designed to have such a long duty cycle.

John, check out ebay.. I mean it. You can buy a compressor there cheap to areate your pond. My pond is half acre and I bought a gast aircompressor there for $90.00 shipping and handleing included. You don't have to spend alot of $ on weighted airline either, go to a local hardware store and buy 1/2 inch waterline and run it from the compressor to the pond. I am useing a soaker hose for diffusers to areate right now but am purchaseing some of the diffusers I was just talking about this week. Ditto for me but I would look long and hard at a kit. I saved a few hundred bucks and I am happy with my aerator but for the problems the kit may be the way to go. There is a VERY nice system on ebay for 300.00

nice kit here.I would still buy a dual membrain diffuser. But for the cash this is nice!

Thank You for all the input. I have decided to take you'lls advise. Now I just have to figure out witch pump to use. There is a kit on ebay I am considering. I have also found a pump at the surplus store I think would work just fine. I was planning on useing the 20$ membrain diffuser everyone keeps talking about. Thanx again this is such a nice site.
