We had a 1 1/2 acre pond that could never hold water. We recently had it cleaned out and increased to about a 3 acre pond and paid thru the teetch to have it lined. I also had a water well drilled and a 3hp submersible pump installed. We ran a 4 inch pvc line from the water well that was trenched to the middle of the pond elbowed up in the middle. Although the water is waterfalling out of the 4 inch line (and not shooting up in the air), it is incredible how fast it is filling the pond -- not much areation, but a tremendous amount of water.

Does anyone have any thoughts on reducing the 4 inch line above the water level to 1 1/4 or something and then T -ing it off and installing the nozzels described in some other posts?

concerns are:
1. will reducing the line cause any problems with the submersible pump?
2. any thoughts on if this will work and what reduction i should make to get some good areation.

hi cb, just a couple ideas here.....i'd look into tapping the line somewhere between the well and the pond and then run some 1/2-inch feeders to different points around pond bank, rig up some spray nozzles positioned and shooting in towards the center. seems to me this would fight aquatic weed growth around pond edges, and break up the surface real well to help keep things oxygenated, plus give you some alternate water sources out and about around pond. once the thing is full, you could probably get away with just valving the 4-inch feed in the pond. with a valve you'd be able to control and maintain pressure on the permimeter lines, if you go that way, and if a drought starts draining things, you still have a 4-inch gusher to fill it back up....good luck and hope you get some more ideas here.

Do you use the water for anything besides the pond? How many GPM does the pump put out and at what pressure? Do you have a pressure tank on the system?

Don't think you would have any problems restricting the flow like you want to. Reason being is I asked my well driller about something similar and he said it wouldn't hurt the submersible well pump because they are designed to handle that situation. I was going to install a valve above ground to restrict down the flow if I wanted to. Again he said no problem. In fact I contacted the well manufacturer and their engineer concurred. However I never did do it.

Here is the system i have set up. I can't seem to figure out how to attach a picture -- i have a 4" line, reduced to a 3" line, reduced to a 1 1/4" line -- shoots water up about 2 feet. My submersible is a 3hp.

Also, on the restriction, rather that turning it off at the electric, we turned it off at the valve and it spun the pump off -- not sure what that meant, but i know it cost money to fix it.

By simply closing the valve, the pump was still trying to pump the water through the end of the pipe. I assume that means you spun the pump off the motor.

The restriction is like taking a McDonalds drinking straw and adding a coffee stir straw to that. Then try to blow air though both of them. It is much harder to blow through the stir straw than the drink straw.

Hello just noticed this. I would like to make a small point about filling a pond with a well.
With the inlet below the surface, as soon as the pump shuts off it is possible for the pump line to siphon back to the well unless he has a check valve. there may be one on a submersible?
