Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat New Pond

Hi, I've been read this forum for a while and finally decided to join today. I just dug a 30k gal pond last fall at my cottage property in zone 5 here in ontario. It's got shade in one side, the shallow end is about 4' and the deep end is about 10' in the center. I am planning on stocking fatheads(1000) and bluegill fingerlings(40)sometime in june. I've been on the fence on what I am going to plant. I'm doing one or two lilies in the shallow end and a mix of watercress and irises around the perimeter. I just got a line on a lot of dwarf saggitaria for a real good price I'm just not sure if it is winter hardy for zone 5. Info on the net is all over the map, from zone 4 to 7 as the coldest. I'd kinda like the shallow end to be a refuge for small fish since a year or two down the road I plan on adding one LMB.
Does anyone have any of this in a cold climate pond?
Also we have no hydro at the cottage and hence no filtration system.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Not sure, you are colder than us. Some hardy hybrid lilies may be OK, and you can try others. The water/ice tends to keep things protected from the coldest air, so survival can be good.

Welcome Waterbug. Why only one predator? If you stock 40 BG this June, by the end of next summer you will have sooo many BG that they will start to stunt and there sure will be no need for a refuge for them, what will they need to hide from? Research a bit about balanced stocking #s. Good luck and enjoy your new hobby.

Hardy lilies do not care how cold it gets, they will be under the ice, the tuber must remain unfrozen. we get up to 5' of ice so I just sink mine in deep water for the winter.

Hey guys, Thanks for all the tips. I know for sure the hardy lilies will be fine but my concern was with the dwarf sag (sagittaria subluta). Anyways I'm taking the gamble since when I went to look at them the guy at the LFS said $50 for the whole tank full. I quit counting them after 200. What a deal, I just hope they survive the winter, or until I plant them. It's still kind of cold to be planting, I should wait a few more weeks, but I have all these plants in a 5gal bucket with water. I put them outside every morning, and bring them in my garage every night. The garage is still cold, but at least they will protected in case we get frost again. Any advice on this? Should I wait a few more weeks or brave the cold water this weekend? Brrrr
To answer the question about the LMB, My goal is to have a pond that produces nice big bluegill. I'm thinking that one predator will keep the numbers down to prevent stunting, without creating a population of bass. Lucky bass will be monster in no time.
