Hi guys,

I have tried the gypsum method twice ( works for a while) and have decided to try the alum. I have a 1 acre pond that was built 5 years ago and still hasn't cleared up. I live close to tulsa and have only found one place that wanted $91 dollars for a 50# bag!!! Has anyone purchased alum in oklahoma for a decent price?

That's nuts. Have you tried the farm fertilizer stores (like a county co-op)?

I struck out at my local CO-OP they only had 4 pound bags. Any other suggestions of where to look?

Check with Helena chemical. I've ordered it from them in the past.

Camo: it's unlikely that your local branch will stock aluminum sulfate.
We keep a supply for aquatic purposes at the Greenville, TX location, but motor-freight expense for small-quantity shipments often costs more than the actual product.
Do you ever travel to the Greenville area?

Kelly you were correct, no Aluminum sulfate on hand at my particular location. I will check home depot this afternoon at lunch and let you know my findings.
Thanks again for the help.

You'll also have to buffer it with hydrated lime (quick lime).

When I need it, it's getting ordered from Helena as there is none available locally.

When I was at school in Arkansas I had no trouble finding Alum at the local farm and ranch store. Might want to call around to some stores in NW Arkansas if you can't find anything local.

Thanks Chris,

I was able to track down 9 bags in dallas that can be sent to my local Univar distributor for .43 cents per pound. Unfortunately they only have granular not powder. They did tell me that they can only sell to businesses, Luckily my in laws own a flooring store so I can possibly use there tax id # if needed.

That's one heck of a deal! It's very unlikely that they'll cover their freight-expenses on that shipment.
BTW: Once you've worked with the granular form, you'll understand why no one relishes the thought of handling the powder.
Even the dust off of the granular-grade will make you pucker up. smile

The "business only" restriction is imposed on chemical distributers by Homeland Security. Some suppliers want you to be a brick and mortar shop, while other suppliers just require a verifiable address and create a cash account.
