Welcome Henry. Glad to see a Brit. What part of UK are you in? I've spent some time over there and loved it. Mostly Derby to the Peak District. Tell us about your experience with ponds and fishing.
I had a Brit friend come to Alabama for a meeting. We had a spare evening so I took him catfishing. He was gobsmacked catching a 4 or 5 pound fish on a private pond. Was kinda fun introducing him to the joy. He tried to explain how most water in UK isn't very accessible to the public. Life is a bit different on opposite sides of the big puddle.
