Soon, we will be getting into fly casting and that is technique.

I am not into the Orvis Fly Casting School or Joan Wolfe 1:00 o'clock - 11:00 o'clock school of casting, but strictly a Lefty Kreh fly caster, giving much more versatility IMO.

That may help some people, I am almost a strictly hands on learner though, reading about how to cast just doesn't sink into my thick head. Heck, I still can't do a decent haul...

I do agree that there are a number of different schools of thought and different people will find useful techniques from various areas. Bottom line for me, find a good teacher and spend some time with hands on instruction.

Me too CMM - I hate having to read to learn when hands on instruction is more beneficial - that's why my backyard is popular hangout for would be fly flingers.
Perhaps all us experienced PB folks should issue invites..

I like Orvis Fly Fishing School vid but dislike casting the "clock" .

What a great idea! I would be happy to have some people out to my modest place for some fly fishing lessons. I have never tried to teach anyone before though, I would hate to frustrate people with an inability to communicate what I mean adequately. But, for anyone near west central Missouri that wants to give it a whirl, give me a shout. I have good places to practice about 200 yards from the pond and a few fly rods all set up and waiting.

I will check out the "Lessons with Lefty" vids. I have a book written by Lefty about great fly fishing destination, very well written, if the videos are half as good, they will be great.

CMM, it's a great deal of fun to have a group lesson. I might check around and see if you have a local fly fishing group that has teaching days, or can come out to help a group at your place. With all the fly fishing opportunities you have in MO, I bet you do. Guy's like that love to help, and can really speed up the learning curve.

For example, I took a double haul class with FFF Certified Casting Instructor Rex Walker last year at Lake Texoma. Although it was primarily aimed at the double haul, he showed us some great basic backyard practice techniques that really cleared things up. I still start out every practice with what I learned from him.

I am a slow learner I had some instruction on both single and double haul, still working on it We do have some fly fishing guides and instructors, but mostly down south a bit, will check around with local shops and see if there are any locals, if there are a few people around that are interested. The most common response I get when I tell people I fly fish is "In a POND!!??!!" They just haven't found the joy yet.

CMM, my guys had the same reaction about me fly fishing in a pond. But, with my clear water, I can't help but feel I'm getting more bang for the buck from my pond. My fish are rarely spooked by a fly, and I can auto-cull by hook size.

With all the wind we have around here, a pond also gives me the ability to fish in any wind direction. I just move to the side of the pond I want, and fish in whatever conditions I want.

My wife and I took our first trout trip in almost 20 years this Fall, and our guide rolled his eyes when we told him we only pond fished. It didn't take long for him to come into the fold and realize that all that water time really helped us both. Casting a fly 4' above an eddy was almost cheating after throwing flies at pockets in water primrose for 2 years.

I had the pleasure of visiting with George for a few hours last week for some hands on training. It was very informative. He showed me a few tricks and techniques that really helped me out. It's not as hard as I thought it might be at first and I had been "playing" with the rod some but with somebody watching me, it really helped. I would encourage anyone to get started, it is fun. Now if I can only get out and use the knowledge at the pond!
