For the most part I've been a bit of a lurker on this forum just trying to learn what I can from everyone elses experiences with their ponds. In the summer time I was having some concerns with my RBT that I had stocked not eating etc and a few nice folks pointed me in the fight direction and in the end, the pond seemed to really come to life in the late summer and fall. Now that there is about 6" of good ice on the pond I decided to drop a line to see what I could come up with. To my surprise a tear drop hook tipped with a couple of maggots really go the trout biting decently. I fished a couple times this weekend for about a half hr to an hour each time and I caught 5 really nice rainbows. I snagged a couple pics of two of them... I cant believe how much they grew considering they were 8-9" long in July when they were stocked. One in particular that I caught has grown about 5 or 6" in length and was an absolute hog! I couldn't be happier to now finally see the fruits of all of the feeding, babysitting and fussing with aeration etc on a daily basis thru the summer I want to post some underwater camera video eventually when I can rig up a DVR system for my camera...

Nice looking fish.
When I look at that ice, think I will stay a few thousand miles south of you though. You guys up there will have to do my share of ice fishing for me this winter.

trust me, I'm very jealous when guys post their catches in open water in December! Only 4 more months til the water opens up again.....

Trout are a blast ice fishing due to them staying active. I also have fond memories as a kid standing around a fire on the ice staying warm waiting for a flag to pop up on our tip ups. Also seeing brook trout cruise just under the ice.
Once I set my tip up, and as i set it in the hole it kept tripping. I attributed it to the wind and was getting thoroughly annoyed until I realized I had a fish on!
This particular 35 acre gem clear lake in Massachusetts had a large zooplankton population the brook trout grazed on just below the ice. The zooplankton would come up into your ice hole. Large enough for the naked eye.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Curtis you will find some trout near the bottom and some just under the ice. Sometimes they can be just about anywhere in the water column.
A flasher like the vexilar can locate them in a hurry although I'm one that likes to quickly move around a pond in my popup without lugging anything with me. I have a vex but don't use it much.
