Got these pigs on game camera over the last few weeks on our family hunting land in PA. Their descendents of a few wild boars and sows that escaped a high fence hunting operation a few miles from our place. I sure would like to whack one of those big boars or a nice sow for the table...

I saw this thread, then went to the store. Not thinking about it, I came home with some smoked pork hocks. Never bought any in my life. Haven't tried them, but they smell good. Just trying to figure out which brain cell should be held accountable

Ham hocks, beans, cornbread and fried potatoes would be worthy of a final meal. I dislike beans unless they have been slow cooked with ham hocks. Now I'm hungry.

I have a guy smoke deer "hams" and they are pretty durn close to pig hams. I have him save the "hocks" for me, and I use 'em for slow cooking with beans or peas. Other guys don't want 'em so he usually has a dozen or more for me.

I would not shoot a big boar unless your trophy hunting. For eats, the smaller < 50 lbs r much better IMHO, at least that's what I've found around here.

Yes, I have heard the same. I want the boar for the wall, then the little ones for the table. Regardless, they all need to go as they are nothing but trouble. I have found the bears to be a far bigger pain in the butt though.

We were told these were over 300# when live. For 4 of us, they were difficult to lift up into the bed of the PU truck.

I tried one today, which wasn't really bad. Then I realized that this was the part that stands in the poo all the time! Gotta be soaked pretty good, and no amount of processing could fix that.

This one was shot on a neighbors place yesterday. 400 lbs and 4" tusks is what I was told.

I wonder what % that bad boy was domestic and what % was wild genes?

I would say very little domestic. No large scale pig farming around here but there may be the occasionally escapee from someone raising a few. Most of the pigs around here are jet black.

Time to break out the 45-70!

A friend shot a 200 lb one on my place a couple of weeks ago. By the time it was dressed out and shoulders and hams taken off, there wasn't all that much meat. The guts had to weigh 40 pounds. The same guy took one that had to go 300+ a couple of years ago.

I've shot a couple of them but they are usually nocturnal.

They are OK to eat. However, if you shoot a boar and walk up to it, you will sometimes find a really rank odor. There is no way to remove that odor from the meat. It's like trying to eat an old goat. We drag those off to the coyotes.
