I have about a 1/2 acre pond that is losing water. I live in NE Georgia where we have had a lot of rain, so the pond should be full. I am pretty sure the area where the leak is but I'm not sure who to call or how to fix it. There are bass, catfish, and brim in the water so draining it to fix it properly is not really an option. I'm afraid it's going to continue to go down and I'll start losing fish. We live in a cul de sac with 7 other homes so the smell of dying fish would not be good. I'm new to the site and don't know my way around so sorry if this topic has been addressed numerous times. Need help, please, not sure how much time I have left before I start losing fish.
Welcome Keith, is the pond yours or do you share it with the other 7 homes? Is the water source creek or run-off? Did you build the pond, or do you know any history of the dam? We have a member here named Greg Grimes, that lives fairly close to you (he's in Ball Ground). I'd call him for suggestions concerning the dam problems. Can you give us a pictures or two of where you see the problem and maybe we can help. I think Greg's website is lakework.com or something close. Will find the # and add later.
Thanks for your reply, The pond is mine, its basically the retention pond for the neighborhood that the builder plugged and put some fish in. So the only way it gets is water is from rain and run off. I do have a well that puts out about 5 gal a minute that I could use to keep it full if needed but with the leak, I could run the well 24/7 and it doesn't put a dent into it. When the builder put it in, he says that he put a liner in the bottom but that was 2000. After we moved in 2004, maybe a yr or 2 after, so 2006, we noticed that the pond had gone down considerably, we felt like it was near the dock, the builder came by with a cement truck and poured cement around the dock and it seemed to stop the leak for a couple years, so I'm thinking the water has found its way under the cement.There are 4 pic attached, there a pic of the side of the dock that shows the cement that was poured.
Keith, nice looking pond. All the experts are out on the weekends, but they should be checking in soon. My guess would be that the problem is where the dock support meets the pond bottom. I'm facing a similar situation and I'm just going to let it continue to leak hoping that it stops some time before the pond is empty and I can find the bad spot. Good luck...
Thanks, I thought the same thing, let it drain down as far as it can go but we keep getting rain so it's been hard. I'm a little concerned about letting it get too low because of the fish. I think the pond is about 12 feet deep in center so there's not much room for quite a bit of fish. I did look up the guys website that you mentioned, may just give him a call this week and see if he could come out and take a look. He did have a post from a Falcons player that lives in Dacula that he made a pond for, so at least he's familiar with the area that I'm in.
