Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Education or Certification

Hey Guys and Gals,

I have searched for a thread with the answer to this question but have not found the answer yet.

I would like to attain a certification for pond management. Are their any courses that allow you to do so with out going back to college full time? I would even consider going for a few courses.

My main focus would be for my own bodies of water but if I chose to assist a friend I would like to know I was passing along valid information.

Any thoughts and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Also, it might be an interesting set of courses taught by our illustrious leaders here.

I would think that there would need to be a governing body to accredit any type of Legal Certification.

You could take some courses to gain more knowledge.

There are some very good certification programs. From all I know about it, this is one of the very best, by one of the very best aquaculture staffs anywhere in the world. Some of the professors were speakers at the last Pond Boss conference.

Auburn University Certification for Aquaculture Professionals

As I recall it is an 18-month program, with most of the work online, at about $6000.

I watched the intro and it really is geared to Aquaculture production. Many of these courses would also benefit a pond manager.

I thought you or someone else was working on a pond management program?

Probably would not be too outrageously difficult to set up a pond management program if you had the right people in authority on the subject.

I had given some very serious thought to organizing a series of training workshops for pond managers. My plan was to work with friends in the Aquaculture Extension Service to develop something similar to the Master Gardener program. Then some health issues stepped in the way that forced me to cut back on lots of my activities.

I'm doing a lot better, but now that I'm retired, I don't have time to do things like that anymore.

Wes Neal and Dave Willis edited a fantastic book they are using in their academic work. For people not looking for certification, but who just want a really good reference book on pond management, there is no other publication like it. Thanks for the heads up on the book, the content looks perfect for a pond owner. I've had the opportunity to hear several of the authors speak, and they do know their stuff.

It is a cool book.

A primary use for this book will be university classes on pond or small impoundment management for advanced undergraduate or graduate students. Practicing fisheries professionals should also find substantial value in the depth of information provided by the book. Finally, private pond owners will find the book to be useful as they seek to learn more about ponds and pond management.

I think the best pond management strategies will be found on the Pond Boss Website due to the fact that there is a vast wealth of knowledge and information here!

Sure, you probably won't get a shingle to hang on the wall, but I know PE's that are dumber than 10 ton's of brick!!!

It's well worth the price, even at double the SRP.
