brand spankin' new pond- need advice!

We would like to add fish and plants. Fish that can be caught and eaten, plants that will provide sufficient oxygen and some shade, but will not take over the whole pond (thinking of possibly planting them in submerged buckets and cutting back the roots every few months). Pond is roughly 13,000 gallons, max depth 3.5 ft. Not sure if we need a bottom aerator system in place or not. Our "issues" so far: brown algae growing, and some dead tadpoles.

Waterwoman,

With the pond being very shallow a bottom placed diffused aeration system would not be the best choice, you need to investigate small fountains or surface agitators.

As for plants....I think you are in the honeymoon stage at this point with this new pond, the plants will come. I suspect you will be battling plants in the future.

Brad, should we try for plants? Do we need them? If so, should we get some grass carp or something to keep the plants under control?

and... as far as aeration, my husband was thinking about making a fountain with a small pump and pvc piping... you think that's a good or bad idea? THANKS!
