Is it bad to get excited
over having fry in the pond just 10 days after bucket stocking some shiners? I plucked this guy out of the water to get him to pose for a picture. He was about 1/2 long.

That is to big (1/2 inch) for a shiner spawned and hatched in 10 days. Eggs take anywhere from 3 days to a week to hatch and fry take several weeks to get to that size. Could they be from another source ?

It's possible they were there all along. The pond is spring fed from just a few hundred yards uphill. But a few hundred yards down stream there is a very small pool with minnows in it. It's more likely that they have always been there but the new pond may have just given them an opportunity to group up rather than fight the stream.

Thanks for sharing the pic. caught some of those little guys out of my pond last night and wasn't sure what they were. now I know they are shiner fry. Mine are about .5 in. long as well.
ewest- do shiners only spawn once a year?

That is a Bluntnose Minnow.
They spawn repeatedly throughout the growing season if temperatures cooperate. Very similar to a FHM. That one is probably around a month old.
