I have just closed on a new home with an exsiting pond. Approximately .25 acre pond fed by well water about 8ft deep at middle. I have been told there are no fish present unless god put them there. am planning to have that confirmed once we inhabit the home in two weeks but having fished it twice have not been able to find any. Seller has had 2 koi in pond before for fun but died at some point so I assume water is ok for fish. I have tested it with a home test kit and found the water ammonia total hardness and nitrate are all in line but alkalinity and ph are very high. I have read that may be corrected with lime..any thoughts as to how much to treat a 1/4 acre pond? And the benefits

I am initially thinking of three options for stocking. A channel and blue catfish pond no spawning planned basically put and take. Channel cats hybrid bluegill and hybrid stripped bass.. again probably put and take. Or bluegill and redear with large mouth bass..this option I think is probably far fetched as the pond is a little small based on what I have been reading. Any thoughts or opinions would be much appreciated.

Also any thoughts on if I should aerate the pond? The water is consistently muddy at least the three weeks I have been around it could this be from well feeding it? It has a little lip on it preventing most runoff from entering it.

Ok. Kind of rambling just excited to have my first home and the best part...the pond. Looking for the experts advice. Thanks to everyone who posts on here I have been researching here daily

Will try and post a pic once I figure out how to.
Randy

Welcome to Pond Boss.

What are the PH and alkalinity numbers?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Ph is over 8.5. Total alkalinity over 300. I am planning on getting a water sample analysis to know more in depth..this is based on a 12 dollar petco test kit. What would the issues be with these levels being so high?

Also anyone know of any good fish farms around houston area? I am familiar with danbury farms as many people around here recommend them but interested in other options as well. Another plus is danbury is forty five minutes from the pond anyone had any sucess with this fish farm?

Texas A&M did water testing for me. They did a great job. Check them out. (979)845-4816.TexasA&M
