I recently purchased a house with a pond in upstate NY. I've been catching a lot of large mouth bass, but tonight I caught something new. The photos aren't very good because there was condensation on my lens. Is this a walleye?

Not a walleye or a sauger. as it does not have the markings for either,

and it looks like the tail fin is all to round.

a walleye's eye will ILLUMINATE at night under light.

That looks to be a bass of some sort. Most likely a Largemouth, and is probably just color phazed a little different than most.

A better picture would be nice.

I see no lateral line, a large head with some what large eyes and a body that may be starved. how healthy do the rest look??

I thought largemouth as well but considering he's been catching largemouth and this fish's mouth does not seem to go back enough (could be photo), I hesitated to call it that. That's the way I initially leaned though.

Looks like a LMB to me from what I can see. Maybe different color, but LMB none the less.

Here's one of the other bass I caught in the pond. The fish today had a very small mouth and was much more of a silver color.

LMB can vary in color depending on many factors. All fish posted are LMB. Color can assist in ID, however morphological features are your best bet.

The likelihood of spotted bass being anywhere in NY is slim. For them to hybridize with LMB and then be in his pond are like me winning the lottery. When a mouth is open, it often doesn't show how far the jaw goes back.

As a taxidermist I've seen largemouth with no lateral line spot pattern or just a few scale spots. Looks like an untypical largemouth to me.

The fish does have some sort of magical glow!! might want to keep it around!!



We do not have spotted bass here either. The jaw does look a little funny?

One way to tell for sure is that you can lip a Largemouth, but you're a better man than I if you can lip a Walleye!

I am always fascinated at how people can see so many different species in just one photo of the same fish.

I've seen thousands of them in the water and in my studio. The look of the fish's skin and the irridescent scales below the hand scream largemouth bass to me.

The head doesn't even remotely look like a walleye.

You've seen a lot of them too. You must agree.
