New Fish Cage

Took advantage of a beautiful day yesterday to get a second cage built.

Due to needing a bigger cage than my first "trash can" cage I built this one at approx 3'x5'x3'D since the water depth at the end of my dock is 3'- 4' deep. I'll also add a partial cover to the top for some shade.

Hopefully between the two I'll be able to house a good number of the 1500 3"-5" BG, to feed twice daily until safe to release to the wild.

Very nice! What type of netting did you use? How did you attach it to the PVC? The auiculture neeting that I have been able to find on-line is pretty expensive.

Thanks RAH, it's a plastic/polyresin (they call it Blue Hawk 36-in x 15-ft Black Hardware Cloth Fencing) and I got it at Lowe's. It was only $12 for a 3'x15' roll and I needed just over 1 roll so I have plenty of leftover. The aquaculture netting would certainly be better but it IS very pricey! If I were doing a lot of cage-culturing I'd probably splurge.

It seems to be fairly sturdy/durable stuff but I still reinforced the cage pretty well with PVC so we'll see how it lasts. After using it, I wouldn't hesitate to use it again on the next cage. And I don't recommend galvanized unless you have a lot of bandaids (from experience).

As far as attaching it, a lot of zipties! Cheap ones so I think they can break down in the sun after time but I had a bag of 1000 so I used 'em.

PVC-cheap, Cloth-cheap, Zipties-lifesavers!

Have a great Easter

Good question, Ken!

I haven't deployed it yet as my BG haven't arrived yet but I wonder about that too.

I'd be interested if anyone else has had that problem or if I should be concerned?

I'm curious as to how high it will float in the pond. I know that you can add floats to the cage, but is all the pvc sealed? Lovnlivin, you might want to "road test" the cage to take care any problems that may arise before your BG arrive.

Good luck.... and I really like your cage!!!

Thanks Hang_loose, updated photo attached but only the link would copy.

I drilled holes in the PVC to allow it to sink, floats have been added and road-test completed and passed!

Now just waiting to add the BG!

Thanks again!
